Prof. Kai van Eikels , Seminar "Participation" , Concepts , Myths, Realities , FU Berlin , WS 2013/14
A lecture performance about rhythm. I start my lecture extremly slow talking. A subsequent discussion on the topic also takes place in this slowness.
Unexpected accents, the voice is fluctuating overwhelmed by the holding of vowels, suspending, accelerating or increasing. Fearing breaks and their silence, we tend to talk faster. Focusing on the debate is high and the slow rate of speech changes the perception of content. There is much more room for unwanted colorations of language expression.
Words and phrases tending to be shortened. The thoughts run ahead, impatience and tension coloring the impression of stretched and onomatopoeic sounding language. Emotions and thought processes are time-shifted against their articulation.
And of course also:
Who is setting the the rhythm in a room? Slow speaking includes the willingness to listen and to let the others speak.
